Hout Bay was given its Dutch name from the abundance of good-quality wood found in the valley. In the late 19th Century, a fishing village started and continue to thrive since. Today, Hout Bay (fondly referred to by locals as The Republic of Hout Bay) as a hub for artists, tourists, craft producers and the best fish and chips in Cape Town.

Chapman’s Peak Drive
Hire a classic car, motor bike or E-bike and cruise on the world iconic Chapman’s Peak drive. There are vista points for you to admire the spectacular view, have a picnic or enjoy a memorable sunset.
Seal Island Boat Trip
Visit the playful wild seals at Duiker Island. A short boat trip from Hout Bay Harbour. There are public, or private trips available. Sunset cruises are available in the summer season.
World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary
Experience one of the largest bird parks in the world a mere 5 minutes’ walk from Bluemari’s Retreat. They also have a monkey jungle, mammals and reptiles. The sanctuary serves as a hospital for injured wildlife, an orphanage and breeding centre.
The Bay Harbour Market
Enjoy the buzz of an authentic food and craft market. Located on Harbour Road. Opened from Friday afternoon to Sunday. Enjoy your yummy find whilst listening to live music by local musicians.
